Last year event was memorable for the fact that it was renamed Hardcore Justice: One Last Stand and featured an one night reunion of the ECW roster.
When asked, TNA President Dixie Carter explain that TNA decided to incorporate ECW into the storyline after seeing market research that indicated interest from fans in the ECW brand (which had been replaced by WWE NXT on Scyfy).
The angle started with the debut of the EV2.0 faction (Mick Foley, Rhyno, Tommy Dreamer, Raven, Stevie Richards) in a mass brawl with the TNA roster on Impact. It is interesting to note that the EV2.0 members are currently no longer active in TNA Wrestling due to various reasons.
Eventually it was revealed that TNA President Dixie Carter had invited ECW to return for one night only on PPV to bide farewell to the promotion. While there were rumors of possible complication with WWE holding the ECW trademark, the event went ahead without any problems.
The Hardcore Justice PPV main event was originally TNA World Champion RVD vs Jerry Lynn in a non title match, however Jerry Lynn got injured and Sabu was the replacement.
Some other noteable matches for last year TNA Hardcore Justice include Tommy Dreamer vs Raven, Team 3D vs Hardcore Chair Swinging Freaks, Rhyno vs Brother Runt vs Al Snow.
The event also featured promo videos by TNA Wrestlers which praised and pay tribute to the ECW promotion. The TNA Hardcore Justice Theme was “Parade of the Dead” by Black Label Society.
During this period, there was said to be some unhappiness backstage by TNA talents about Dixie Carter having ECW on a TNA PPV. TNA management balance out the issues by having the original TNA Hardcore Justice matches featured on a special 2 hour Live edition of TNA Impact. The show was headlined by Rob Van Dam vs Abyss for the TNA World Title, which saw RVD retained the title but was then taken out by Abyss backstage and subsequently stripped of the World title.
The irony of the situation is that the TNA PPV Buyrates 2010 reported show that the ECW theme Hardcore Justice PPV drew around 20,000 Buyrates, which was higher than the average TNA PPV buyrates of 8000-15000. Rating also grew slightly and initially there was buzz about relaunching the ECW promotion under a new name in TNA Wrestling.
Ultimately once the buzz had slow down, the TNA Impact ratings show that there was no significant increase in ratings, live events or ppv buyrates and the idea never came to fruition.
This year TNA Hardcore Justice 2011 Matches should be headline by the reigning TNA World Champion Mr Anderson. TNA Wrestling crowned a new World Heavyweight champion last Sunday at the TNA Slammiversary PPV.
Mr. Anderson fought in the penultimate match of the evening against Sting and won – after his victory over Jeff Hardy in January (Genesis 2011) – the second TNA World Title of his career.
At the end of the match, the former Mr. Kennedy benefited from a distraction by Eric Bischoff. Mr. Anderson’s next opponent is Kurt Angle who was in the main event with Jeff Jarrett and likely settle their intense feud. Kurt Angle won and become official the new No.1 Contender for the TNA World Champion.
With next month TNA Destination X 2011 PPV becoming an X Division reunion show, there is the possible chance that Mr Anderson vs Kurt Angle TNA World Title match will take place at TNA Hardcore Justice 2011 PPV on Sunday 07 August 2011 from Orlando Florida.
